A Fig Packet

White, juicy, flowery. These are not any figs, these belong to the Dottato variety, grown only in a very small area of the Cilento National Park in Campania. White Dottato figs are prized for their uniquely sweet and plump pulp, and full flavor with notes of honey.

Since the beginning of the 1900s, the Santomiele family has been passing down traditional recipes for drying figs from generation to generation. Made completely by hand, these are a special treat available in limited quantities. Watch Signora Rosetta making a traditional fig packet aka fagottino.

Santomiele figs are dried in the sun for about 10 days during summer and then splashed with fig molasses + rum to give them extra moisture. Finally, they join raisins, candied orange peel, and crunchy almonds in a fig leaf wrap to create a lavish explosion of aromas.
